Importing data into Domo

Domo offers a connector for the Meltwater API that allows you to bring results of earned media exports and analytics into their platform.

You can read about the connector on the Domo knowledge base. You can also read Domo’s overview on using connectors.

In this guide we’ll walk through the process of using the connector to bring export and analysis results into Domo.

Before you start

  • Make sure you have an ACTIVE (reoccurring export) or FINISHED (one-time export) export.
  • Make sure you have access to a Domo account. If you don’t yet have a Domo account they offer a free sandbox environment which you can use to try the Meltwater connector.

Accessing the Meltwater connector

Once you have signed into Domo, starting from your dashboard:

  • Select DATA in the toolbar at the top of the screen.
  • Under CONNECT DATA at the top of the page select Cloud App.
  • Search the available connectors for “Meltwater”.
  • Click on the Meltwater connector.
  • Click GET THE DATA to start configure the connector.

Providing your Meltwater API credentials

The first step of using the connector is to provide your Meltwater API credentials:

Enter your API token (key) and click Next to continue.

Choosing data to import

The next step is to configure the connector to fetch the data you’d like to import.

You can choose to import one of:

  • The result of a One Time Export
  • The result of a Recurring Export
  • The result of an analysis request

The connector only allows you to select one data set for import. You can import multiple exports or analysis results by creating multiple connections.

Note that not all customers have access to exports and analytics features. If you are unsure check with your account manager or the support team.

Importing an earned media export

To import an export result:

  • Select One Time Export or Recurring Export as the REPORT type.
  • For COMPANY most customers will only have one company listed, this is their Meltwater account. If you have access to multiple Meltwater accounts / companies you can select the appropriate company here.
  • Select the EXPORT you’d like to import. In the list exports are identified by their ID and the name of the first search / tag in the export configuration.

The connector imports the majority of data fields for an export, but if you’d like to import authors, key phrases, matched keywords, or tags you need to select one of these using the ADDITIONAL DATA field. (Currently the connector does not support importing all of these fields in one connection.)

Importing an earned media analysis

To import an analysis result:

  • Select the appropriate analysis type from the REPORT dropdown. For example to import a ‘top keyphrases’ analysis select “Analytics Top Keyphrases”.
  • For COMPANY most customers will only have one company listed, this is their Meltwater account. If you have access to multiple Meltwater accounts / companies you can select the appropriate company here.
  • Select a SAVED SEARCH for your analysis. Only one search is allowed.

  • Select a SOURCE for the analysis, for example “Twitter”.
  • Depending on the analysis type you have chosen there may be additional options, such as LEVEL for top locations analysis.
  • Select a DATE SELECTION for the analysis. We recommend you choose Date range here as it is easiest to relate to the API.

The above parameters request a ‘top keyphrases’ analysis for the “Artificial Intelligence - UK” search, for Twitter over the last 7 days.

Setting a data refresh schedule

The connector can pull fresh data on a schedule.

One-time exports

If you are importing a one-time export you don’t want to refresh the data on a schedule, so set the Update interval to Manually.

Recurring exports

If you are importing a recurring export you can set the connector to refresh on schedule that matches the schedule for the API export.

For example if you have an export scheduled to run weekly, you can set up the Domo connector to run once the API export is complete. We recommend you allow 30 minutes for the API export to complete before attempting to fetch data using the Domo connector.

Analysis requests

For analysis requests you can set a schedule that is appropriate for the analysis configuration. For example, if your analysis requests top keyphrases for the last week you might set a schedule to pull a refreshed analysis each week on a Monday.

Whether or not you set a schedule you can choose one of two UPDATE METHODs. Choose Replace to completely replace the data set each time data is refreshed, choose Append if you’d like to keep all data and just add additional data to the set each time.

Click Next to continue.

Naming your dataset

Finally you need to give a name to your dataset. You can optionally add a description too.

Enter a name and click Save to continue.

Once you click Save the connector will bring data in to Domo for use in your analysis project.

How the connector consumes your API limits

For exports, the connector itself will not consume your API limits. For one-time exports your limits are consumed when you create the export using the Export Console or by calling the API. For recurring exports your limits are consumed each time the export is run on your chosen schedule by the API. Refreshing the data for an export in Domo simply downloads the existing export result.

For analytics, the connector will call the appropriate analytics endpoint. Therefore when you first fetch data through the connector, or the connector refreshes the data, each time this will use one of your analysis calls from your limit.
